Lilian Greenwood, Labour’s Shadow Rail Minister, commenting on a speech by the Tory Transport Secretary in Leeds today, said:
“Patrick McLoughlin’s speech is little more than a list of previous announcements which glosses over the Tory record of failure in recent years.
“Ministers have forced evening price hikes of up to 162 per cent on passengers and important infrastructure improvements, such as TransPennine electrification, are facing unacceptable delays.
“The Government’s real approach to transport in the North was revealed last year when they let modern trains transfer to the South without any replacements lined up, and the average cost of rail fares has risen by 23 per cent over the last five years.
“This latest stunt is merely an attempt to distract passengers from Ministers’ failure to give passengers a fairer deal. We need improvements to the North’s transport networks and to passenger services, but given their track record there can be no confidence in the Tories’ ability to deliver.”
