Labour Leader and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband has given his backing to market stall holders in Mexborough campaigning against huge rises in rent.
Visiting the market in his constituency this morning, Mr Miliband made clear that the plans set out by English Democrat mayor Peter Davies to increase charges to stall holders by up to 500% are utterly wrong and unjustifiable.
Campaigners against the rent hike, many of whom have had family businesses in the market for generations, presented Ed with a petition, which he assured them he will pass on to the mayor.
The mayor argues that current rent levels are very low in comparison to other similar markets having not seen any increases in fifteen years. But Mr Miliband told reporters that Peter Davies has a complete lack of understanding of the issue, adding that no one at the market is expecting to see no rise at all, especially in the current economic climate. But he said hitting hard working people with a 500% increase in their rent, threatening their ability to continue trading, would be ridiculous.
