Labour's policies

The Labour government elected in 1997 made a real difference to Yorkshire and the Humber during its time in office. Now working in opposition we are speaking up for our region and fighting to protect the massive imporvements to public services we deleivered in office.

The Labour government's legacy for Yorkshire and the Humber:

  • There are 1,367 more consultants and 656 more GPs, as well as an estimated 8,029 more nurses and an estimated 594 more dentists since 1997.

  • Funding for the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber has increased from £4.6bn in 2003/04 to £8.1bn in 2009/10.

  • There are 2,400 more teachers and over 11,000 more teaching assistants in Yorkshire and Humber's schools.

  • 345 designated Sure Start Children's Centres offering services to around 270,000 children under 5 and their families, with a further 48 centres in development.

  • By 2008 5+ good GCSEs up 61% of pupils from just 38% in 1997.

  • 1,083 more police officers in the region since 2001.

  • Recorded crime in 2008/09 down by 22% on 2005/06.
